Airsoft is as safe or unsafe as any other sport; it is all dependant on the collective players’ sportsmanship.

Like all physically demanding sports, or contact sports, protective equipment is worn for two reasons:

Keep you safe
Avoid situations where a consciously unequipped player sustains a preventable injury by BB, leaving the shooter with mixed feelings… Guilt, confusion, irritability, sympathy, both self-forgiveness and self-flagulation. The list goes on. NO ONE WANTS TO BE THE GUY THAT SHOT LITTLE TIMMY’S EYE OUT, even if it was Timmy’s fault.
It is each player’s honour in responsibility that ensures the collective sportsmanship (and thus safety).

On top of wearing protective gear for BBs, you’d be wise to wear proper footwear to avoid rolling an ankle.

Suffice to say, no, Airsoft is not safe. But like any other sport, there are rules and honour in place to eliminate preventable danger. I would argue it is no less dangerous, perhaps even safer, than American football or hockey.. both have been linked to head trauma, an injury that you’ll never know if you’ve truly recovered from.
